Ditch those square posts
Avoid creating new 1:1 posts or carousels. Instead, focus on the 4:5 ratio moving forward. Not everyone has the update yet, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare.
…but don’t delete them
That’s right, just leave your existing square posts be. We know it can be tempting to remove any content that looks ‘off’, but remember, everyone is in the same boat. Plus, it’s worth mentioning that most people don’t even look at your content directly through your page, so they probably won’t notice if things look a bit messy.
Retire landscape
Sorry photographers, it’s time to say goodbye to landscape posts. Instagram’s all about engagement, engagement, engagement. And sadly, landscape content is falling behind in this race. Just think about it. Landscape images only take up half of the screen size compared to a portrait post or reel. This means it’s much easier to just scroll past and completely ignore your post.
Leave padding
When creating your new content in the 4:5 ratio, make sure to leave extra space around the border of your designs to prevent cropping on the grid previews. Remember, the preview is slightly smaller than the actual post, so bear that in mind when creating content.
Stick to the 4:5 ratio
Even though the new profile grid displays content at a ratio of 3:4, Instagram limits content dimensions to a maximum width of 1080px and a maximum height of 1350px. We’d recommend creating all photos and carousels to a ratio of 4:5, but ensuring key content fits within the 3:4 framework to avoid cropping in the grid previews.
