Navigating Instagram’s Profile Grid Update:

The Ultimate Instagram 2025 Sizing Guide

Navigating Instagram’s Profile Grid Update:

Instagram has done it again. Just when we thought we'd all finally got to grips with the ever-changing algorithm, Instagram have switched things up. Following the dramatic, albeit brief, 12-hour TikTok ban, Instagram did not hold back on the opportunity. And this time, they've rolled out not one, but six new updates. Where do we even begin?!

Well, let’s talk about the big one – the new portrait profile grid. By now, you’ve probably noticed that Instagram has shifted from the classic 1:1 square grid to a taller 4:5 ratio. This change has caused quite a stir in the social media world. Our thoughts go out to everyone who carefully curated their feed over the years. Cheers, Adam Mosseri. (Can someone let him know we preferred it the old way?)

But don’t let this deter you from posting. We’ve put together the ultimate Instagram size guide, covering all content types and sharing our top tips for posting on the platform in 2025. Oh, and did we mention it’s free for you to download?

Now, let’s chat about the changes. Those nostalgic square, polaroid-like previews we all knew and loved have been replaced with a taller model. While Instagram hasn’t explicitly said it, it’s pretty clear TikTok’s influence is at play here. Along with their new profile grid ratio, extended reel lengths, and the announcement of ‘Edits’, their soon-to-be-released CapCut competitor, it seems Meta is trying to morph into TikTok, one update at a time (or six, in this case).

Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, has been quite vocal about the platform's direction. Instagram is constantly evolving to enhance user experience and keep up with trends. The taller grid is designed to give more space for content, potentially making it more visually appealing. In one of his weekly Q&A sessions, the Instagram Chief shared that most of the content being uploaded is already larger than the default square, meaning that posts were already being cropped to fit the feed. He argues that this update was necessary to ensure that Instagram stays relevant. Plus, with the constant push on Reels, this update isn't exactly a shocking twist. While it aligns with the content shift seen in recent years on the platform, we understand how it's proved difficult and frustrating for long-time users.

Here's everything you need to know, so far:

What are the new sizes?

  • Posts & Carousels: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5 ratio)
  • New Grid Preview: 1080 x 1440 px (3:4 ratio)
  • Stories & Reels: 1080 x 1920 px (9:16 ratio)

Our Instagram 2025 Top Tips

Ditch those square posts

Avoid creating new 1:1 posts or carousels. Instead, focus on the 4:5 ratio moving forward. Not everyone has the update yet, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare.

…but don’t delete them

That’s right, just leave your existing square posts be. We know it can be tempting to remove any content that looks ‘off’, but remember, everyone is in the same boat. Plus, it’s worth mentioning that most people don’t even look at your content directly through your page, so they probably won’t notice if things look a bit messy.

Retire landscape

Sorry photographers, it’s time to say goodbye to landscape posts. Instagram’s all about engagement, engagement, engagement. And sadly, landscape content is falling behind in this race. Just think about it. Landscape images only take up half of the screen size compared to a portrait post or reel. This means it’s much easier to just scroll past and completely ignore your post.

Leave padding

When creating your new content in the 4:5 ratio, make sure to leave extra space around the border of your designs to prevent cropping on the grid previews. Remember, the preview is slightly smaller than the actual post, so bear that in mind when creating content.

Stick to the 4:5 ratio

Even though the new profile grid displays content at a ratio of 3:4, Instagram limits content dimensions to a maximum width of 1080px and a maximum height of 1350px. We’d recommend creating all photos and carousels to a ratio of 4:5, but ensuring key content fits within the 3:4 framework to avoid cropping in the grid previews.

Adjusting Previews on Existing Posts

The big question on everyone's mind is: Can you adjust the previews of existing posts? Yes!

But don't get too excited just yet, the options are limited at the moment. You can go to a specific post, tap the three dots in the upper right corner, and select 'Adjust Preview'.

Currently, Instagram offers a 'Fill' or 'Fit' option, but we'll be honest, they're not perfect. However, Adam Mosseri has promised more customisation features in the future, including cropping and reordering thumbnails. Hopefully, it will all be worth the wait.

So, are you ready to take back your feed? Don’t let Adam Mosseri and his taller grid get you down! Download your free guide now and let’s show Instagram that we can handle anything they throw our way.
