Meet our digital marketing apprentice, Amy Lawrence
Our digital marketing apprentice, Amy Lawrence, tells us more about learning on the job
Why did you decide on an apprenticeship?
Having graduated from University last summer, I struggled to find work without industry experience until I discovered the possibilities of an apprenticeship. It allowed me to gain hands-on experience whilst learning SO much! Getting paid to learn was a nice change from Uni and meant the team could train me exactly how they would like. I recommend an apprenticeship to anybody, and I have learnt a lot in just six months.
Describe a typical day/week at Feel Created
Wow, where do I even start? Each week is entirely different - and I love that! My typical day can range from working on social media assets for ourselves and clients to creating web pages such as blogs and case studies. I have a background in design and illustration, so I can apply those skills to this role. Tasks include working on icon design and, recently, Lottie animations, which is super fun!
The great thing about Feel Created is that with us being a smaller team, I can collaborate in all areas of the business, which is unusual for an apprenticeship, so I feel very lucky to have this experience!
What is the best thing you've learned as an apprentice?
I studied illustration at University, so I had a basic understanding of using Adobe software (Photoshop, Illustrator etc.). This year I've been able to work on developing those skills to a professional standard. And I have to mention Canva! What a great marketing tool that is, right?
Not only have I learnt so much about content creation, but my new knowledge about all things web development and the principles of digital marketing even surprises me! Working with such a great team of experts here at Feel Created is extremely inspiring. Every day feels like a school day… but in the best way!
What kind of projects have you been involved in?
During my apprenticeship, I have had the pleasure of working on various projects for our clients, including creating tone of voice (TOV) documents, interactive pdf forms and updating their website (adding new pages). I have recently completed a series of social media assets for a sixth-form college. This project consisted of establishing the brand identity for their social campaign and creating video guides for the college to be able to capture their own user-generated content internally.
One of my most recent projects (and perhaps my favourite to date) has been assisting Ian (our creative director) with designing icons and Lottie animations to feature on a new Council website, specialising in Teen Health topics and services. Understanding how designs can translate to web is really interesting to me, and no two projects are ever the same… it’s a lot of fun being able to push the creative boundaries in each project, and then seeing them brought to life is so rewarding.
Where do you see your apprenticeship taking you?
When I graduated from University, like most 20-year-olds, I had little clue about what I actually wanted to do - that was probably why I went to Uni in the first place. Whereas now, I have developed so many skills in different areas, I feel the world is my oyster (cliché I know, but true). That said, I can't picture myself doing anything else - I just love it too much! I thoroughly enjoy working in design, but I would consider social media marketing to be my specialist area. Being able to combine these two sectors would be my ultimate dream job role, and I never would have had this opportunity without my apprenticeship.
Would you recommend the apprentice route to other young people?
Absolutely! Having experienced both University and an apprenticeship, the apprenticeship route has been more beneficial to me personally. Working in a professional environment has taught me transferable skills, including communication and good industry practice, that I could never experience during my time at University.
